the small dark birds steal her breath
pecks at a time
she oozes out memories through her starving lungs
the air floats just above her lips
lashing at her skin
out of reach in quick whip snaps
some kind of beatnik in the dark
scars accumulate and run down her body like rain like ants like fire
up to her elbows in carbon dioxide dreaming
a place her death fears to tread
despite her ceasing sounds
she laughs (hollow) at the magpies
the mockingbirds
the renegade turtledoves
they think to take away her own grown wings
tearing her apart feather by feather.
she laughs at them, and floats anyway.
