letting go

*******************************
it's like swimming underwater
with your eyes closed
knowing where you are
without knowing where you will be
if you are broken,
heavier in the water than before
if you are cast off,
no life preserver but the air you cling to
its the quiet that gets to you
how little you need to speak anymore
how much your eyes widen
how thirsty your skin
you have never heard your heart so clearly;
watched your chest rise and fall
aching for the kind of slumber
that pieces you back together
its the hollow limbs
awkward in their gait
saving up for just one dance that never comes
switching off the lamp every night
the echo overtakes the darkness
the absence like a night light
like the finger of god
and what you will never have again
