actually buying a bike will be way out in the future. i'll have to save for quite some time. but in the meantime, i could potentially use my dad's

Date: 2007-03-23 12:30 am (UTC)Start with a small bike, one that you can pick up when you dump it (and you will, at least once). Tipping the darn thing over is embarassing enough, without looking for someone else to help you pick it up. My criteria for my first bike (a Kawasaki 440 LTD) were that I had to be able to sit on it and put both feet on the ground (not a problem with your long legs), that it had to be under 500cc (a good idea for beginners), and that it had to be light enough for me to pick up when I dumped it (it weighed 350 pounds). I did dump it twice the first year. Both times when I was pretty much standing still and the darn thing just started to topple over. I figured it was smarter to drop it than to throw out my back trying to fight 350 pounds of hot metal.
Wear long pants and good shoes or boots. I have a second degree burn on my ankle from a hot pipe from another time it tipped over (never park in sand!). And buy the best helmet you can afford. They're your brains.
I am so buying a new bike with next year's tax refund. We should start a rennie/wench biker gang. =0
