So my friend and I walk into the bar. I like this club; it’s a great venue, lots of rooms, spacey. While neither of us knows any of the bands, the headliner is one ive wanted to check out for quite some time.

On first is Last…who should have been, so we could leave before they went on. Don’t get me wrong; these three guys were darn talented. It’s just that they played in shades of gray. There was no real energy in their show. The third song was by far their best, but the rest of the music could have been the same song over and over. There was no real variation, no tempo change. A monologue of metal, so to speak. I really couldn’t figure out why they were on this tour at all.

Next opener is Pighut. Not bad. No drummer in the band, and a drum machine that isn’t that strong either. Leaves an interesting sound with two guitarists and a bassist. The singer had a lot of life and reminded me of a young Michael Patton. At least they were into the show and wanted to be there. The singer rocked more with a broken foot than the entire previous band. Highlight of their set list included a beefy version of INXS’s “Need You Tonight.”

Then who we all came to see: 30 Seconds to Mars. Yes, you could argue that the band is only popular because of Jared Leto. Then when you start to see them play you change your mind. They own you. And your firstborn. I haven’t seen this much stage presence for a very long time. The crowd was completely responsive. The songs were deep and meaningful without being drippy, the music tight and overwhelming. A striking and powerful cover of “Message in a Bottle” got the crowd singing along.

A damn fine show leaving me counting down the days until the cd comes out.
